Friday Update: Comic Con and Comics

We have a light week this week for the Thursday Update as we ramp up for San Diego Comic Con.  Both Windows and AIR are getting some minor updates before Comic Con fix things behind the scenes.  You should see some speed improvements in both applications.

Our Windows community members asked that we include people’s names and pictures in comments, so, as we do, we listened and made the change.  Now when a community member hasn’t updated their picture you can still see who made that comment you really liked about Veronica’s hair.

This week’s comics are both from Archie Comics and BOOM! Studios.  Check out the haul below:

Archie Comics

Betty #138 - #139

Follow Betty in her very own series with such fun adventures as Archie and Adam fighting with each other over Betty and what happens when Archie and Betty go on a picnic?

.

Betty and Veronica #221

“The Big Prize”: A Halloween costume contest judged by renowned luminaries from the fashion and entertainment worlds leads Veronica to more costume changes than a diva in concert! “Career Daze”: Veronica gets a lesson in judging books by their covers when she realizes that the professional scientists and law enforcement agents at career day are as attractive as the super model! “Code in the Head”: Betty has dropped what appears to be a mysterious code, and it’s got Veronica’s brain doing crazy, cryptic back flips!

BOOM! Studios

Challenger Deep #1 - Avg Rating on iFanboy: 3

When an experimental nuclear submarine is marooned in a deposit of methane ice deep in the Marianas Trench, an elite salvage team mounts a daring rescue to prevent an explosive chain reaction that could lead to global disaster!

.

Cover Girl #1-5

When the world’s biggest action movie star discovers someone’s trying to kill him, he has to keep his adoring public in the dark about the fact that he’s the world’s biggest wimp. So he hires a bodyguard - a Cover Girl who kicks ass and cleans up well for movie premieres! In the vein of Lethal Weapon comes an action-comedy that flips all the gender stereotypes on its head…

Fall of Cthulhu #1-2

Forces are moving in the cosmos.  Mankind is on the verge of facing alien beings far beyond its kin.  Is another call for Cthulhu just starting to begin?  Human innocents are caught in the middle and not prepared for the real truth – which will drive them to the brink of insanity.  What happens in a world of Lovecraftian darkness when a god is fated to die?  What things are more vast than the Elder Gods?

Galveston #1-#4

True fact- fabled pirate Jean Lafitte spent his last years not on the high seas, but in Texas. Guess who his best friend was? Jim Bowie. What adventures must a swashbuckling corsair and an American frontiersman have had together in the Old West? It’s Deadwood with pirates, man. Pirates!

Dusman7 made a call to arms for the first issue of Galveston, “Oh, come on people, a cool new western mini!  Let’s support new and different comics.  I’m sure at least a few of you out there would love this comic.  I know I’m looking forward to it.”

Hawks of Outremer #1Avg Rating on iFanboy: 4

BOOM! Studios brings you an epic story by Conan creator Robert E. Howard published in comic book form for the first time ever! As a wandering warrior born and bred on the battlefield, Cormac FitzGeoffrey is a renowned fighter, a ruthless adversary, and a man who is no stranger to the ways of bloodshed and violence. Cormac counts his friends on one hand, so when he learns that his most recent liege has been murdered, nothing will stop his quest for revenge. By oath, a path of vengence will be marked by the blood of his enemies.

Hunter’s Moon #3-#4

It starts when stockbroker Lincoln “Linc” Greer, divorced dad, is acquitted of the murder of his son by the local authorities. Meanwhile, who have they picked up in the woods? Is it the kidnapper? It’s becoming clear the entire town’s in on it - if Linc talks to the wrong person, it could jeopardize his son’s life!

Irredeemable #14Avg Rating on iFanboy: 4

The Paradigm is held captive. Survivor has been abducted. Bette Noir is on the run. And Modeus continues to manipulate Plutonian into committing unspeakable acts of evil. With the team fractured and Gilgamos wounded, how will the Paradigm escape their captors and take the fight back to their former leader? The epic second year of Irredeemable continues to pick up even more momentum with this can’t-miss issue!

jmsnyder had this comment to say about Irredeemable #14, “What a consistent must read this has been. It has this undertow of dread that you can almost taste as u read it.”

Poe #1Avg Rating on iFanboy: 4.7

Everyone knows that Poe created the detective genre, but did you know he was a detective himself? Finally the secret can be revealed for the first time! Enter the world of POE and follow the famous author of darkness as he tracks the killer of his brother’s friend. Supernatural adventure for fans of books like HELLBOY!

Jmstump (that’s me!) had this to say in his review on iFanboy, “This books is some weird amalgamation of CSI, Sixth Sense, and Sleepy Hollow.”

Unthinkable #5Avg Rating on iFanboy: 5

Novelist Alan Ripley was an unlikely hero, trying (and failing) to stop UNTHINKABLE terror scenarios he imagined from coming true. Now that he’s finally succeeding, will he learn who’s using his mind as a blueprint for terror, and why?

Alright, who else is excited for Galveston from BOOM! Studios?  I mean Cowboys and Pirates, that’s 5 year old Jon’s dream come true.  All it’s missing is Flame Throwers and Zombies or something equally ridiculous.  Dusman7 also made a call to arms to fellow comic and western fans.  My love for both cannot allow this to go unheard!

If you haven’t heard through our Newsletter we are going to be at San Diego Comic Con at booth 2229.  We’ll be making some announcements during the convention along with having stuff going on at our booth, for instance we will have some signings from different creators.  Stop by to find out who.

Micah will also be on a few different panels about Digital Comic Books.  You can find him at the following times and locations:

Double FYI - The guy with the black eye after heckling Micah in his first panel is probably me too. (He told me to say that.)

If you have any questions or comments on this week’s updates please send them my way vie email, jons [at] graphicly.com, or our community forum

Friday Update: Digital Comics on Windows 7

Recently we released our Windows app, which is available to download at http://graphic.ly.  If you haven’t heard, you can check out the press we recieved at CNBCVenture Beat, and Comic Book Resources .  We’re excited with all of the new features in the app and to hear our community’s thoughts on it.

The new Windows app is a complete overhaul of our beta that came out earlier this year.  My favorite part about it is all of the touch functionality.  We have an HP Touchsmart here in the office and it’s fun to be able to navigate through the store, My Collection, and comics without a mouse.  I don’t know why, but being able to use touch functionality to move through comics on a desktop makes me feel like the future is here.  I then wonder where our Flying Cars, Auto Lacing Shoes, and Hoverboards are or when Skynet is going to finally take over.

If a new Windows app wasn’t enough, we also we have new books for both the Desktop and iPhone.  Check out the haul below!

Archie Comics

Betty and Veronica #212, #214 - #220

Follow the adventures of “best friends and worst enemies” Betty and Veronica as they fight over who gets to date Archie, discuss spirit week at school and find the perfect shoes.   Each issue of Betty and Veronica has 3 or more stories for you to follow!

.

BOOM! Studios

Hunter’s Moon #1 - #2

Stockbroker Lincoln “Linc” Greer, divorced dad, is looking forward to a hot date in a remote cabin for the weekend. When his date cancels and he gets stuck with visitation rights with his son, he takes the boy hunting in the wilds of Oregon. Before he knows it, his son is kidnapped and a voice at the other end of his cell phone tells him to do what he asks - if he ever wants to see his son again! Linc soon finds that he’s the only African-American man in this small mostly white logging community. Isolated and alone, he’s got to face a contentious community and save his son!

Marvel

Civil War #1 - #7

The landscape of the Marvel Universe is changing, and it’s time to choose: Whose side are you on? A conflict has been brewing from more than a year, threatening to pit friend against friend, brother against brother - and all it will take is a single misstep to cost thousands their lives and ignite the fuse! As the war claims its first victims, no one is safe as teams, friendships and families begin to fall apart.

House of M #1 - #8

The Avengers and the X-Men are faced with a common foe that becomes their greatest threat: Wanda Maximoff! The Scarlet Witch is out of control and the fate of the entire world is in her hands. Will Magneto help his daughter or use her powers to his own benefit? Starring the Astonishing X-Men and the New Avengers!!

World War Hulk #1 - #5

An epic story of anger unbound! Exiled by a group of Marvel “heroes” to the savage alien planet of Sakaar, the Hulk raged, bled and conquered through the pages of last year’s “Planet Hulk” epic, rising from slave to gladiator to king. Now the Hulk returns to Earth to wreak his terrible vengeance on Iron Man, Reed Richards, Dr. Strange, Black Bolt, and anyone else who gets in the way. Stronger than ever, accompanied by his monstrous Warbound gladiator allies, and possessed by the fiercest and purest rage imaginable, the Hulk may just tear this stupid planet in half.

Audrey wouldn’t let me update you on the recent comics until she’s informed the community of what X-Book to read.  This week it was House of M and here’s what she had to say:

With the super mega crossover that is Second Coming in the X-men books right now, it’s good to go back 5 years and see where it all began.  What would you wish your life to be like?  Would you be horrified by the results when you got your memories back?  Also the Scarlet Witch steps up and shows why her reality altering powers would help her defeat Zatanna in a one on one fight. (Hear that Marvel and DC?  That’s the crossover I want to see!  Of course then the two would team-up and erase everyone’s memories, THEN change the world.)  Pick up House of M and see how and why the mutant race was decimated, in preparation for a new Hope…

Also X-Factor fans: make sure not to miss out on Layla “I know stuff” Miller’s first appearance in House of M.  She’s kind of a McGuffin here, but it’s interesting to see from these beginnings where Peter David would take the character.

Now, while everyone is enjoying the newly released Windows 7 App and comics this week, I need to find a hiding place.  If you remember, Micah once threatened to make me watch Chatroulette for an extended period of time if one of these updates was late.  Now I just need to hope he doesn’t find me.

Check out this week’s comics along with the new Windows 7 App and let us know what you think by either dropping me an email, jons [at] graphicly.com, or through our community forum.

Thursday Update: New Publisher Archie Comics

This week’s update is full of comics including a new Publisher to Graphic.ly: Archie Comics.  We’re excited to welcome all of the teenagers from Riverdale.  Check out the full haul below.

Archie Comics

Betty and Veronica #201 – #205; #207 - #213

Follow the adventures of “best friends and worst enemies” Betty and Veronica as they fight over who gets to date Archie, discuss spirit week at school and find the perfect shoes.   Each issue of Betty and Veronica has 3 or more stories for you to follow!

.

BOOM! Studios

28 Days Later #10 – Avg Rating on iFanboy: 3.7

The Infected are the menace. But the Blacks Ops team that has invaded Great Britain may be the real monsters. Selena, Clint and Derrick come across a game changer in their quest to London. What they learn may be more horrific than anything they’ve seen before.

Incorruptible #5 - #6 Avg Rating on iFanboy: 3.6

The origin of Jailbait unfolds, and her story’s not at all what you think it is! Is she really a dim little slip of a girl - or does she have some sort of power over Max Daring heretofore unrevealed? How did she end up with Max Damage? And what will her tombstone say? Max Damage is about to learn a lesson and his path to redemption may very well be paved in blood!

Mikeandzod21 had this to say about Incorruptible #6 – “I find this the better of the two books (Incorruptible and Irredeemable). And those covers are awesome.”.

Irredeemable #13 Avg Rating on iFanboy: 3.8

The members of the Paradigm are held captive, helpless to prevent Modeus from manipulating Plutonian into his greatest act of evil yet. The second year of Mark Waid’s epic begins a new story arc and steamrolls into uncharted waters never before seen in the superhero genre. Nothing will ever be the same in a post-Plutonian world.

Rchapoteau gave Irredeemable #13 a 5 out of 5 for Story and a 4 out of 5 for Art in his short and cryptic review.

NOLA #1 Avg Rating on iFanboy: 5

After cheating death, Nola Thomas wakes up alone in a deserted New Orleans hospital. Bruised, broken, and badly burned, she emerges from the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina with one thing on her mind…revenge. From Chris Gorak, the writer/director of the critically acclaimed film, Right at Your Door!

Kate and Audrey from Graphic.ly haven’t read the entire series yet, but they’re interested to read more as this seems to be an allegory for the revenge of all the things that went wrong in the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

The Anchor #8 Avg Rating on iFanboy: 3.9

The strangest team up in all of comics takes place when The Anchor partners with The Anchor! Now reunited with his soul, The Anchor begins a one-man war on the forces of Hell to rescue an innocent from their clutches. It’s a battle royale that can only end in a showdown with Satan himself.

Zombox from iFanboy had this to say about the last issue of The Anchor – “It’s a pity this series is ending. I found it to be an enjoyable read every time. That said, they got to tell their story and a story that ends is always welcome.”

The exciting news this week is that we have Archie on board as a publisher.  We launched with comics that weren’t as friendly to the younger crowds, but now with the inclusion of Betty and Veronica along with Archie in general that all changes.   So if you have some younger friends, siblings, nieces or nephews we now have options for them too, and will continue to grow.

There are two books this week that everyone should be excited about.  The first one is The Anchor #8.  The Anchor #8 is the final issue in the series, which marks the first time we’ve gotten a complete series that a user, Fleaman47, requested.  Keep those requests coming, we prioritized this series over others due to community response, and after reading some of it I’m glad we did: fun series!

The second book is 28 Days Later #10.  Anyone who liked the original movie by Danny Boyle should be reading this book.  The series of 28 Days Later by BOOM! is a direct sequel to the original movie and it’s delivered on every issue.  The last time we saw the group they were being tracked down by some military forces, hopefully we start to find out why.  Not to mention Declan Shalvey’s art is just right for this book.  Check out this panel of Selena leading the group through the woods:

No update to Adobe AIR this week, but we have some exciting news soon about one of our other apps.

Check out this week’s comics and let us know what you think by either dropping me an email jons [at] graphicly.com or through our community forum.

A storm forces the young stockman inside. Faced with the gruesome scene and the sounds of the violent storm his imagination gets the better him. It’s then “The Ghost” appears at the window.

BOOM! Studios

Dead Run #1 - #2 Avg Rating on iFanboy: 3.95

“All Speed. No Limits.” The end isn’t near… it’s here. America has become a wasteland, leaving the few cities that remain transformed into impenetrable fortresses. Beyond these walls lies The Zone, a brutal, plague-ravaged landscape stretching from one city to the next, populated by mutants, monsters, and warring factions of survivors driven insane by disease and starvation — only the very brave or the very foolish voluntarily step foot outside the protective confines of the mega-cities.

For more info on Dead Run check out this episode of Waid TV from CBR with the creators.

Unthinkable #1 - #4 Avg Rating on iFanboy: 3.4

They’ve been hired to think the UNTHINKABLE. But what happens when the unthinkable actually happens? After 9-11, best-selling author Alan Ripley joins a government think tank consisting of the most imaginative minds in diverse fields. Their job? Think of nightmare scenarios and crippling terrorist attacks so the government can safeguard against them. But when members of the think tank start to disappear one by one, can Alan stop the UNTHINKABLE from coming to pass? Find out in this new mini-series from hot writer Mark (TWO-FACE YEAR ONE, CYBORG) Sable and rising talent Julian Totino Tedesco.

From edward’s review of the first issue: “Unthinkable is a story about all the little things that go wrong in life.”

Cold Space #1 Avg Rating on iFanboy: 3.8

From legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson and Emmy nominated writer/producer Eric Calderon, the team that brought you the Emmy-award-winning, best-selling AFRO SAMURAI comes their next original series - COLD SPACE. When an on-the-run outlaw crash-lands on a hostile planet on the brink of civil war, he finds himself in the crossfire between two warring factions. But in chaos lies opportunity - because where there’s war, there’s money to be made. A hard-boiled sci-fi action-adventure with covers by Eisner Award-winning artist Dave Johnson and IRREDEEMABLE cover artist Jeffrey Spokes!

From akamuu’s review of the first issue: “Floating somewhere between Serenity and Fear Agent, Jackson and Calderon have got a balls-out fun space opera going on.”

Of the new books in the store this week, Celtic Bard’s Ghost of the Murderer’s Hut was one that really caught my eye., It’s based off of a poem of the same name by poet Andrew Barton Paterson.  I’m a big fan of older  Ghost/Horror stories, so The Ghost of the Murderer’s Hut sounds like something right up my alley.  What do you think?  Are you excited for old school ghost stories?

But the book I’m most excited for is Dead Run.  The creators mention in the Waid TV interview that they were looking at John Carpenter films, Judge Dredd, Mad Max, etc. for inspiration, so you know its gonna be good.  And the art by Francesco Biagini looks great.  Take a look below as Nick Masters drives through the wastes fighting Mutants:

Sweet Car, right?  It almost makes me want to do an A-Team Montage of my VW Jetta to make it as cool as Nick Masters’s car.  What do you think community, should I break out the welder?  Anyone want to help?

Before we start mounting a weapons onto my car, check out this week’s comics and let us know what you think by either dropping me an email jons [at] graphicly.com or through our community forum.

Thursday Update: Yay! Comics!

Today’s update is a large round of BOOM! Studios comics.  To remind everyone we are on an every other week schedule with our AIR app so there will be an update for the app next week.  Check out below for the books that came out this week.

“Think your boss is tough? Try working for a superhero! While your boss is out fighting crime, you get the pleasure of scheduling public appearances, getting the dry-cleaning done, and keeping a tidy secret lair. Millions would kill to be a superhero’s personal assistant like Jimmy Lohman. Unfortunately, he’s not one of them. A story of capes, cowls, and Blackberrys. Features covers from Saumin Patel and Joe Quinones.”

odebreakers #1

Codebreakers #1   Avg. Rating on iFanboy: 4.6

“Busting foreign spies on domestic soil. Cracking the code on drug and human trafficking. Shutting down the mob. They are the elite Cryptanalysis Unit of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, examining manually encrypted documents and records of illegal enterprises, providing expert testimony, forensic assistance, and identification of terrorism, foreign intelligence, and criminal activities in support of federal, state, local, and international law enforcement investigations and prosecutions… Ciphers. Codes. Encryption. Passwords. Meet the best of the best at puzzling out the truth and protecting all of us from those that would steal information in ways that can shatter the global community and kill. But what happens to the Cryptanalysis unit when one of their own goes missing? Is it a puzzle the puzzle-solvers can’t solve? And will this cipher reveal things about… themselves?”

ComicAddict – “It’s a good first issue. Boom has really been putting out some great comics, and Codebreakers is just one more in that list.”

ie Hard Year One #8

Die Hard: Year One #8 Avg Rating on iFanboy: 3.3

“The rest of his fellow cops are dealing with a blackout. His partner is dealing with problems of her own. The only one who can take down the villain who started all this trouble? New York’s own John McClane! It’s his first case as a detective. Could it be his last? o Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep #1 (OF 24)

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep #1 through #10 Avg. Rating on iFanboy: 4.8

“THE BOOK THAT INSPIRED THE FILM BLADE RUNNER COMES TO BOOM with backmatter by Warren Ellis! Worldwide best-selling sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick’s award-winning DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP? has been called “a masterpiece ahead of its time, even today” and served as the basis for the film BLADE RUNNER. BOOM! Studios is honored to present the complete novel transplanted into the comic book medium, mixing all new panel-to-panel continuity with the actual text from the novel in an innovative, ground-breaking 24-issue maxi-series experiment illustrated by acclaimed COMA and WOLF artist Steven Dupre! San Francisco lies under a cloud of radioactive dust. The World War has killed millions, driving entire species to extinction and sending mankind off-planet. Those who remained coveted any living creature, and for people who couldn’t afford one, companies built incredibly realistic fakes: horses, birds, cats, sheep… even humans. Rick Deckard is an officially sanctioned bounty hunter tasked to find six rogue androids — they’re machines, but look, sound, and think like humans - clever, and most of all, dangerous humans. Rick Deckard, Pris, The Voight-Kampff Test, Nexus 6 androids, the Tyrell Corporation: join us for the publishing event of the year!”

JohnVFerrigno had to say with his iFanboy review, for Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep #1 “As somebody who has been reading comic books for almost thirty years, it is rare indeed that I experience something new while reading a book.”

Potter’s Field #1 through #3

“Outside New York City is Potter’s Field, where the unnamed dead are buried. Now, a mysterious man has taken it upon himself to name the unnamed! Meet John Doe. He has no identity. He has no history. He leaves no fingerprints. Using a network of underground operatives who don’t know each other, he fights to save the unsaved and solve the mysteries of the unjustly slain! But what’s the past that John Doe is trying to hide? And how can he find the keys to in the cemetery for the unnamed dead?”

Potter’s Field: Stone Cold One Shot Avg Rating on iFanboy: 4.5

“Mark Waid (52, KINGDOM COME) and Paul Azaceta (DAREDEVIL, B.P.R.D, TALENT) return to their smash hit crime series POTTER’S FIELD! The detective known only as John Doe pins identities to New York’s anonymous dead, moving grave to grave—but now he’s stumbled onto a pattern, and a conspiracy that leads all the way back to the horrors of September 11th!”

nchor #2

The Anchor #2 - 7 Avg Rating on iFanboy: 4.0

“Heaven’s hulking enforcer is on the hunt for both demon blood and the truth about his origin. His never ending battle takes him to a wild horse preserve in England where he must destroy or be destroyed by a hellish, bestial huntsman who feasts on unwitting campers. On a scale of 1 to 10, this comic goes to eleven.”

devildog – “Love the art and the story is one of the most original I’ve come across.  Anchor (the character) is an amazing concept: a godlike creature that cannot be damaged on earth, but is continually fighting for his life in hell (i think?).  Interested to see where it goes.”

Zombie Tales: 2061 One Shot Avg Rating on iFanboy: 5

“The living dead walk among us! Zombies have taken over the planet! Humans only exist as novelty attractions…or worse. But today is the day of revolution and soon the tide will turn on undead supremacy! Academy Award-nominated writer Kim Krizan (BEFORE SUNRISE, BEFORE SUNSET) presents a zombie epic like no other! Ripped from the pages of the critically acclaimed Zombie Tales anthology! Collected in one volume for the first time!”

This week we have 27 books in total, which is the largest week we’ve had for content since we started back in April.

I’m especially excited for Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, since it was the basis for Blade Runner, a film I love.  Sadly I’ve never gotten around to reading the book, but BOOM! Studios has taken Phillip K. Dick’s novel and kept the text in tact.  Which means you can enjoy the novel while reading a comic.  It was also nice to see that 4 out of 5 reviews on iFanboy gave the first issue praise for keeping the original script in tact.  What do you think? Are you interested in reading text from a novel in a comic?  Or would you prefer a different writer came on and transcribed what originally happened?

Another book that everyone should be super excited for is Potter’s Field by Mark Waid.  I recently read the first three issues along with the one shot and feel that it’s better than any other BOOM! Studios books I’ve read.   As far as I know this is one of the few times that Mark Waid hasn’t written a superhero and his take on a crime/noir book.  Check it out and let us know what you think.  Should Waid stick to writing Superheroes?

Let’s not forget Paul Azaceta’s art, which sets the overall mood for the book.  Take a look at a panel of the main character John Doe breaking into an apartment.  Why is he breaking in?  You’ll have to pick up Potter’s Field to find out.

Finally I’m interested in The Cape.  They say that working for a Superhero is tough, but I’m curious if it’s as tough as working for Micah.  I bet he doesn’t have to run for a Diet Coke randomly through the day and made to wear a cape while doing it.

Make sure to check out everything and let me know what you think either via email jons [at] graphicly.com or our community forum.
