Spoil Alert! Tumblr and Comics
I only have one major gripe with Tumblr’s Comic Community. When Wednesday hits, or sometimes the night before when people get early copies of comics, Tumblr peeps think that it’s fair game to whip out a scanner and start scanning. When they do post these images there are no spoiler alerts for what has come out this week. I can take Previews spoiling stuff for me, We all knew there was going to be a book titled, “The Return of Bruce Wayne,” but there’s nothing in Previews that tells me how he comes back. I still get a chance to read the comic when it comes out which allows me to enjoy the art and story. Sometimes all we have left as a reader is the story and art. Posting Spoilers can take this away from others as readers. Before you respond with, “Then you should unfollow us.” I would end up unfollowing some quality comic book tumblr blogs in the Comics Community on Tumblr for Graphic.ly and myself. People, who generally post fantastic pictures, links, and videos that I like to share and communicate with, would be taken out of my stream. I’d rather not do that. Also the defense of “I posted this and now you can save 3.99 on a crappy book.” is a poor one, maybe a book that you think isn’t good is someone’s favorite book that came out that week. Everyone’s taste is different. All I’m asking is, please wait to turn on the scanners till later, if you can’t here are some tips below. Tips on how Spoilers can be best avoided: Post it as a link. I’ve posted things here on The Couch where I only had the link for people to click through. An example was pictures from the Green Lantern Movie. I remember someone sending me a message to thank me for making it a link so I didn’t spoil anything. Put up a spoiler image to cover what’s there. You can do this by posting a blurred image or some stock picture that says “Spoiler” and linking back to the real one. It’s simple enough to post the original image on Flickr for your spoiler image to link to. Wait a week, maybe two. I feel if I haven’t read my books in a week it is fair game to spoil it for me. Although this one is trickier with people getting their comics later and later via mail, digital, or even international readers. I’m sure the above advice would work for anything else like Movies, Books, Video Games, Etc. Hopefully people actually take this to heart and I ask that if you feel the same way to reblog this with any additional comments or advice you have. I know what I have above as far as advice may not be perfect. I’d like to hear from people who think it’s okay to post things the day they come out and why. What do you think Tumblr Community?
